Best Practices

Best practice-189 — Lighting should be glare free. In general, lighting source should originate from behind the individual (over the shoulder). Computer screens should be free of reflection. The source of the light should not be directly visible as the individual works.
Best practice-190 — Lighting intensity should be adjustable.
Best practice-191 — Floors and walls should be different colours providing at least a 70% contrast between the surface. If this is not available, a contrasting baseboard should divide the colour between floor and wall.
This rule of contrast also applies to office dividers, baffles and temporary walls.
Best practice-192 — The work surface should be dark enough that a white paper laying on the surface will be in a 70% contrast with the surface.
Best practice-193 — Surfaces such as desks and tables should have dark edges that visually stand out against their backgrounds.
Best practice-194 — All material should be available in multiple formats. This includes but is not limited to ASCII text file, Braille, large print and audio format. See the "Manager's Guide to Multiple Formats" for more information.
Best practice-195 — Presentation material such as overhead and computer presentation slides should be clear, large print and in "point form". Lettering and objects should be in at least a 70% contrast with the background. Images and charts should be described orally during the presentation or available in alternative format. Choice of font should be Helvetica or other fonts that have no thin lines as part of the letter.
Best practice-196 — Meeting and training rooms should be away from noise and not be next to rooms with noisy machinery such as photocopiers.
Best practice-208 — Persons with disabilities who self identify should be consulted directly so they may participate in the accommodation process.
CHS-209 — A Sign Language Interpreter should be provided when necessary.

CHS-210 — A notetaker who types the oral content of a presentation should be provided when necessary. The typed translation is projected onto a screen simultaneous to the presentation.

Internet-251 — Web authoring tools shall comply with Priorities 1 and 2 of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) "Authoring Tool Accessibility Guidelines" available at http://www.w3.org/TR/ATAG10
Internet-391 — At least one browser which conforms to World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) "User Agent Accessibility Guidelines 1.0" found at http://www.w3.org/TR/UAAG10 should be present in any software suite.
Best practice-207Printed text: Use high contrast—black on white (or very light coloured) background 8.5 x 11. White lettering on black background is also acceptable. Font should be of uniform thickness (i.e., sans-serif , Arial), minimum 14 point, text should be "flush left" and "ragged right". Text should use lower and upper case. Titles should be in all upper case letters. Spacing 1.5 times height of letter. Thick paper (non-see-through), non-reflective, without distracting background. Page numbers top right. Lettering should not be reflective. 25.4 mm margins.
Unknown source-254 — Shelving units should allow shelves to be set at various heights.
Unknown source-257 — The tray should be: capable of adjusting downward by at least 100 mm;
  • lockable in continuous or incremental positions within that range; adjust upward to a position flush with the primary work surface; angle of tray should be adjustable.
  • Fixed-height support surfaces or pull-out support surfaces for keyboards and other input devices should allow clearance under the work surface of at least 55 mm from the top of the desk to the surface of the tray.
  • The tray should be long enough to hold a keyboard and a mouse. If the tray does not accommodate a mouse, then a separate adjustable tray should be purchased for mouse use.
